Where does Manchester United new boy Andre Onana rank among the most expensive goalkeepers ever?
The Red Devils are breaking the bank for a new shot-stopper
Manchester United are closing in on a massive move for goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is expected to join the club from Inter Milan in the coming days.
Following the departure of David de Gea at the end of his contract, the Red Devils have been on the hunt for a goalkeeper who is comfortable with his feet. To that end, they have fallen on Onana, who drew rave reviews from everyone watching even as his side fell to a 1-0 defeat in the Champions League final in Istanbul.
He won’t come cheaply though, with the Red Devils thought to be set to pay a massive 55m euros all in for the Cameroonian star, a fee that will consist of 50m euros up front plus a further 5m euros in potential add-ons.
It will make him one of the most expensive shot-stoppers, though he will remain some way off top spot. That accolade still belongs to Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined Chelsea all the way back in 2018 for a fee of £72m.
That same summer, Alisson made the switch from Rome to Merseyside in another high-profile goalkeeping move, for a reported £67m, though he has since paid that back several times over.
Onana slots in nicely just behind those two, ahead of the likes of former record holder Gianluigi Buffon, England no.1 Jordan Pickford and German icon Manuel Neuer.
