Manchester United vs Brighton & Hove Albion match preview

Following a very underwhelming start to the season, Manchester United kick off in 11th place, under enormous pressure to kick off a crucial week with a victory.

Last time out, Erik ten Hag’s team were cruelly beaten 3-1 by Arsenal, conceding twice in stoppage time, after Alejandro Garnacho himself thought he had won it, only for VAR to have other ideas.

This though merely continues Man United’s miserable record away from home.

Against teams who finished ninth or higher last season, the Red Devils yielded just a solitary point from a possible 24 on the road, and have since began this season with defeats at both Spurs and Arsenal.

At home meantime, they’ve so far scrapped to one-goal victories over both Wolves and Nottingham Forest, very lucky to claim victory in the former, before fighting back from 2-0 down against ten-men in the latter.

On Wednesday, Man United begin their Champions League campaign away to Bayern Munich, a daunting prospect to say the least, making a win in this one all the more vital.

Before the international break, Evan Ferguson’s hat-trick saw them spectacularly demolish Newcastle 3-1 at the Amex.

Roberto De Zerbi’s team had began the season with back-to-back 4-1 wins, before coming off the rails slightly with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham.

Nevertheless, following each of Brighton’s last ten Premier League defeats, they’ve bounced back with a victory, keeping that streak going against Newcastle.

Last season’s sixth place finish has seen the club qualify for Europe for the very first time, so there is much excitement in Sussex ahead of their Europa League opener against AEK Athens on Thursday.

After that, the Seagulls will also take on two former European Champions Olympique de Marseille and Ajax in a very glamorous group.

Before then, Brighton travel north full of confidence, having won each of their last three Premier League meetings with Manchester United, claiming their first-ever victory at Old Trafford 13 months ago.

So, will the visitors add to Man United’s misery?

Manchester United team news

In the last fortnight, Antony has been suspended by the club, due to domestic violence allegations made against him, while Jadon Sancho isn’t available either, having publicly fallen out with Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Raphaël Varane, Kobbie Mainoo, Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount and Amad all remain sidelined.

Centre-backs, Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelöf both went off injured at Arsenal, meaning they ended that game with a pairing of Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire.

Lindelöf is fit, having featured in both of Sweden’s matches last week, so will he be partnered by Evans or Maguire?

Further forward, Alejandro Garnacho will come in on the right-wing, while could Sergio Reguilón be in line for his debut at left-back?

New striker Rasmus Højlund made his own debut a fortnight ago, so will make his Old Trafford bow in this one.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelöf, Evans, Reguilón; Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes; Garnacho, Rashford, Højlund.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news

Hat-trick hero Evan Ferguson is out, having missed Republic of Ireland’s two qualifiers, while Danny Welbeck is also a doubt.

This means João Pedro is set to lead the line, while Ansu Fati is likely to make his debut, having arrived on loan from Barcelona.

In goal, Bart Verbruggen appears to be the new number one, usurping Jason Steele in the pecking order.

Should James Milner feature, it would be his 624th appearance in the Premier League, chasing down Gareth Barry’s record of 652.

The gap between Milner’s Premier League debut and his most-recent appearance (7,601 days) is longer than the time between World War I and World War II (7,599 days).

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Verbruggen; Veltman, Webster, Dunk, Estupiñán; Gilmour, Groß, March, Ansu Fati, Mitoma; João Pedro.
