The Premier League has certainly saved the game of the weekend for last, with these Northern juggernauts set to go head-to-head for the 186th time.
Newcastle United are aiming to bounce back from last Saturday night’s 1-0 defeat at the Etihad, rarely threatening the Manchester City goal at any point.
A week earlier, in the sole home fixture of the campaign so far, Eddie Howe’s team were on fire, demolishing Aston Villa 5-1 at St James’ Park.
Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes both marking their debuts with a goal, Alexander Isak scored twice and Callum Wilson helped cap off a memorable evening on Tyneside late on.
Since Howe’s arrival as manager in October 2021, the Magpies have lost just four of 34 Premier League home games, although they’ll take nothing for granted, given that Liverpool are responsible for two of those.
The Reds actually kick off one point above their hosts, but it certainly doesn’t feel as though this is the case.
Nevertheless, Luis Díaz fired home an equaliser, Mohammed Salah poked in a rebound, after seeing his penalty saved, before Diogo Jota made the points secure late on, despite the fact they were down to ten men by then.
On the opening weekend, Liverpool were involved in a very chaotic 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, and the Reds look set to be very entertaining this season, if not equally as successful.
In better news for the visitors, Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 meetings with Newcastle, winning each of the last four.
The Magpies’ most-recent victory in this fixture came in December 2015, prevailing 2-0, with Martin Škrtel scoring an own goal, before Georginio Wijnaldum netted against his future employers.
Despite these recent head-to-head results, most would make Newcastle strong favourites to prevail at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe named an unchanged line-up for last weekend’s visit to East Manchester, so will he stick with the same XI for the third game running?
This’ll see Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes, who both scored as substitutes against Aston Villa, left on the bench.
Tino Livramento came off the bench for his debut at the Etihad, while fellow new full-back Lewis Hall will be hoping for a debut of his own here.

Liverpool have been crying out for a defensive midfielder in their first two games and they’ve now got one, with Wataru Endō, who came off the bench against Bournemouth, likely to start for the first time here.
Alongside will be Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, the latter is available after seeing his very harsh red card last week rescinded.
The front three, Luis Díaz, Mohammed Salah and Diogo Jota, all scored lat weekend, so Darwin Núñez will remain in reserve.
