Portugal vs Bosnia & Herzegovina match preview
Portugal have never ended a European Qualifiers campaign with a 100% record but, in an admittedly weak Group J, could be about to change that.
Back in March, the Roberto Martínez’s era got up-and-running in style, with his new team demolishing Liechtenstein 4-0 in Lisbon and then Luxembourg 6-0 three days later.
A Seleção have featured at all 12 major tournaments since the turn of the millennium, and it was always going to take a full-scale implosion for that fact to change this year.
So, up against the section’s second-seeds, will Portugal pull-clear at the top of the group?
Bosnia & Herzegovina meanwhile did feature at the World Cup nine years ago, but are yet to make their European Championships debut, beaten in the play-offs in each of the last three cycles.
The first of these came at the hands of Portugal, smashed 6-2 in Lisbon in November 2011.
However, three days later, the Golden Lilies could not back this up, suffereing a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Slovakia in Bratislava.
Bosnia, Slovakia and Iceland are all likely to take points off each-other in this group, making the head-to-head clashes between the two vitally important, meaning defeats in those fixtures could prove doubly costly.
Anything the visitors get from this fixture will be seen as a massive bonus, with a comfortable Portuguese win expected at Estádio da Luz.
Portugal team news
Cristiano Ronaldo became the most-capped men’s player of all-time back in March and, assuming he features in both games this week, will earn his 200th in Reykjavík on Tuesday.
Of his 122 goals at international level, 71 have come in qualifiers, including a brace in the Euro 2012 play-offs against Bosnia.
In goal, Diogo Costa is now the number one, taking over from Rui Patrício, while centre-back Rúben Dias could start, a week on from winning the Champions League.
Roberto Martínez deployed a back three for March’s two qualifiers, a switch wing-backs João Cancelo and Raphaël Guerreiro will enjoy.
In-behind Ronaldo, Martínez has an array of attacking options, including Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão, Diogo Jota and João Félix.
Bosnia & Herzegovina team news
Bosnia can still rely on their golden oldies; Miralem Pjanić and Edin Džeko have 235 caps between them, with this the last chance for both to represent their country at a European Championships.
Other familiar faces include Sead Kolašinac, once of Arsenal, and Anel Ahmedhodžić, who’ll be representing Sheffield United in the Premier League next season.
